  1. And itโ€™s directed by Joss Whedon who is both the love of my life and the bane of my existence.
Ditto this! I don’t watch too many films in the theater, but my son’s grandmas have already been booked for this weekend’s Avengers outing. ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. YES. I was just talking to a girlfriend over the weekend and said, “The only thing that doesn’t look 100% made of win in this movie is Scarlett–ugh!” Her take was that Scarlett isn’t meant to appeal to the womenfolk, but seriously. The dudes are good not just on the eyes but in their roles. There are so many women who could’ve been good on the eyes and good for the role, so I just don’t get the decision to cast her, no matter how much I’ve enjoyed her in other roles.

  2. Well, first and foremost, her character sucks. She’s not a demi-god, she’s not a 12-foot tall monster, and she doesn’t have half the snark appeal of Tony Stark. Nor is she a genetically engineered super-soldier brought back from WWII. All she is, is a chick who can shoot guns.

Secondly, I know they had to have a female character to balance out all of the rampant testosteron-y dudeness of the movie, but the least they could have done is cast someone who is more enjoyable to watch and easier on the eyes. (Personal opinion here, but I just don’t think she’s anything to write home about.) That character is a perfect role for some new young starlet to fill, and it’s not like Joss Whedon’s never done that before. I mean, that’s kind of his “thing”.

    Anyway, Rant over.

    1. Do you think Hawkeye sucks too? He doesn’t have any special super powers either. He’s just a dude who shoots arrows.

Personally, I don’t have strong feelings for or against Scarlett Johansson, but I liked Black Widow in the film. I don’t want to give anything away, so I won’t write too much, but her character serves a purpose other than to look good/be the Smurfette of the Avengers.

      1. Oops yeah I forgot about Hawkeye. His character is kinda lame also, yeah. I guess I’m just bitter because two regular people like Hawkeye and Black Widow got to join the club while Antman didn’t. Granted, this is coming from someone who hasn’t seen it yet, so I guess I have no room to talk, but still- Antman got screwed.

  3. For me, the appeal of both Black Widow and Hawkeye is that they are (mostly) normal people who get included in this team of extraordinaries.

I should say I know nothing about the comics, only the movie ‘verse, so the exclusion of Antman didn’t bother me. He is getting his own movie though (according to imdb: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0478970).

    1. Joss Whedon kills all my favorite characters. It’s not a surprise anymore, but it’s still upsetting. Also, as much as I love Firefly (it’s my favorite TV show) it kills me that it’s a world where the US and China made up the dominant powers of the ‘verse, but there are no Asian people on the show.

But I also love him since he gave the world Firefly. And Buffy. And The Avengers. Et al.
