I’ve still got Gatsby on the brain, and wanted to think of a good marry, date or dump to incorporate Nick Carraway because I’ve already done one with Jay and one for the ladies from the book. So I thought I’d pair Nick with some of my other interesting and perhaps unreliable narrators from two of my other favorite books – Holden Caulfield from The Catcher in the Rye and Jake Barnes from The Sun Also Rises. This trio really has me stumped because there are so many reasons to want to marry all of them and so many reasons to want to date all of them. Jake is too troubled, Holden is just troubled enough and Nick–well troubled comes in many forms—friend, friend, friend — too complicated to date, dumping would just add to their problems, and marriage–I think not

Marry Nick, he’s a spineless judgemental whiner, but they all whine and at least he has money and a good family and connections. Date Jake, even without sex all that running around Europe and watching bullfights would be a lot of fun. Dump Holden. He probably wouldn’t want me anyway. I don’t come off as particularly genuine most of the time and we all know how he feels about phonies
Love your reasons … I think Holden would think I was a phonie too. But that is an easy bet as he finds pretty much everyone a phonie, except maybe his little sister. Must to re-read.
I have a soft spot in my heart for Nick Carraway so I would marry him, date Holden and dump Jake. But not easy choices! I went back to your post with Gatsby and I don’t know how a person could choose between those three! That’s cruel. 🙂
Yeah, I don’t know what is meaner when we pick three horrible people that no one would want to marry or three wonderful people who no one would ever be able to dump.
