This week’s top ten tuesday from The Broke and the Bookish was too good to resist. However the process of choosing these characters was more angst-filled than I expected. I had a difficult time defining the term secondary character. Would it be more insulting to call Calvin O’Keefe from A Wrinkle in Time a secondary character or to leave him off the list. I had similar fears about Gilbert Blythe. Seriously, I’ve been taking both of them on and off the list. I also made a rule I could only chose one character per book. Let’s face it, without the rule the list would just be a character list from Harry Potter.
But anyways it’s Tuesday and here’s where the list stands right now. Let me know who your favorite secondary characters are in the comments.
I was going to include Dumbledore in my list this week too. I went for Luna and Neville. There are just too many awesome characters in Harry Potter!
Picking just one character from Harry Potter … I alternated between Dumbledore, Neville, Hagrid, and Fred & George forever.
Gilbert Blythe! I’m so happy he’s in this list, it is actually making me want to re-read Anne of Green Gables. Also Atticus Finch, what a great character! Loved this list! Though I have to say I am a bit intrigued about Mr. Collins!
Haha yes … I suppose Mr. Collins goes in the love to hate category. He doesn’t really belong on this list, but I do think he’s a well drawn character.
For To Kill a Mockingbird, Dill is one of my favorites. In Pride and Prejudice, I have to go with Charlotte Lucas. For Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, I’m going with Aslan. I’m with you on the rest (except for Will Grayson, Will Grayson and The Masque of the Black Tulip, neither of which I read.
Admission: I never liked Charlotte Lucas … although I do like her more than Mr. Collins. He’s a holdover from when I thought this was going to be 10 most memorable secondary characters! I can’t wait to read your list!
Mr Collins is just so delightfully greasy isn’t he? Even though Mercutio gets some great lines, I went with Tybalt – gotta love a bad boy. Here’s my T10T

I’ve never met someone that liked Tybalt before … I can’t wait to see what your list looks like. Thanks for commenting!
I love Hans from the Book Thief! (Have you seen the movie trailer yet? I’m pretty excited about it…)
I’m so excited about the movie too! There are so many good ya book adaptations being made right now or about to come out!
I’m teaching To Kill a Mockingbird right now to a homeschool co-op class of 9th-10th graders. They are having a whole lot of fun debating whether Atticus is the main character or a secondary character. (I’m not participating just listening and it is FASCINATING to hear their arguments). I love your list! It contains many of my all time favorite books.
Wow, I bet that is really interesting. I think it’s really hard to define who is a main character and who is a secondary character.
Thanks for commenting!
Mercutio is on my list too!!! I love him. And I love that you have Atticus on your list. He’s perfect.
Thanks for commenting! I’m glad to see someone else has Mercutio!
ERMAGERD, I totes love Atticus, Mercutio, and Mr. Collins!!!!!!!! Mr. Collins is one of the best parts about that story! Gahhh! XD I don’t *really* remember Calvin O’Keefe cuz I read A Wrinkle in Time yearrrrs ago, so I am unsure about that one, but I think that might be a yes.
Nice choices! 😀
Glad you like some of my choices. Mr. Collins is certainly a unique character!
I immediately thought of Mercutio, too!
He is the most vivid part of that play to me.
Love your characters!
Tiny, Tumnus, Dumbledore and Atticus! ❤
But I think that Tiny was actually more of a main character than the Will Graysons, or at least every bit as important. John Green has confirmed that this might be a correct observation from a certain viewpoint.
Yeah, I went back and forth wondering if I should count Tiny as a main character or secondary character. Thanks for commenting!
Awww, Turnip. I have such affection for ALL of Lauren Willig’s creations, but Turnip has a special place in my heart. “Mischief of The Mistletoe” is probably my favorite in the series.
The only character that came right to mind for me was Mr. Lawrence from Little Women. His storyline with Beth is, to me, the absolute heart of that book.
I’m so glad to find another pink carnation fan! Also I didn’t think of Mr. Lawrence, but he is fantastic!

I had to think of 10, too, so it seemed only fair to make a separate post!
Great post! The Jester from King Lear is such a good call. He’s the best part.
Alison: How could you possibly think that Atticus is a secondary character. He is the story to be told….Your Nana
Hi Nana! Thanks for commenting. In the book I think he’s a secondary character. In the movie I think he’s a main character. But lots of people seem to agree with you on this, so perhaps I should reread To Kill A Mockingbird.
You have a nice list here! 🙂
Thanks!
Mr Tumnus and Mercutio! ❤ Great picks!
