Marry, Date or Dump: Kurt Vonnegut, Ray Bradbury, and Philip K. Dick

120407_vonnegutTombSlaughterhouse5The authors that are your choices for this week’s marry, date or dump aren’t contemporary, but they did all did write about the future. All three also wrote books that completely terrified me when I first read them in high school. Let me know who you would marry, who you would date, and who you’d dump, when given the options of Kurt Vonnegut, Ray Bradbury, and Philip K. Dick. I can’t wait to see which science fiction, silver fox you choose when I read the comments!

  1. Marry Ray Bradbury because I love his imagination and the way he could write about autumn and Halloween and seasons in a way that makes me remember being a kid again;
    date Phil Dick because one day we’d be having dinner together and he would say, ‘do you mind if my friend stops by?’ and there would be a knock at the door and it would be Harrison Ford, and thus my torrid, adventurous romance with Indiana Jones would begin;
    and dump Kurt Vonnegut because he is too clever-cynical for my tastes, and I would not want to have to deal with the hipsters that would always be stopping us in cafes and grocery stores to tell him they totally love his work.

    Yay! Finally a marry, date, dump I could contribute to. I’m usually too clueless about at least one of the options to be able to say anything haha.

    1. I’m glad you could contribute! Always feel free to leave suggestions for trios or themes you want to see on marry, date or dump … they are starting to get hard to figure out. also the friendship with Harrison Ford is news to me. That’s a pretty sneaky plan you have going.

      1. Oh, well I’m not sure if they were actually friends, I just know Harrison Ford starred in Blade Runner, which was an adaptation of Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, and…well, it all makes sense in my head. 😛

  2. It’s a tough choice because two of the three suffered from mentally illness. You almost have to pick Bradbury, but he’s almost too soft and cuddly. I actually met him so, it’d be weird. I’m soft on Vonnegut because he adopted and raised his sister’s 3 kids after she died of cancer. I think Dick was probably an interesting date simply because he married 5 times. There had to something appealing about him.

    In then end, I think I’d have to dump them all.

  3. Ray Bradbury wrote the very first short story I ever fell in love with, so that’s an easy one for me! Marry Bradbury for sure. Vonnegut strikes me as exactly the kind of quirky guy it would cool to date for a while, but long term? Maybe not. I’ve actually never read Dick… so it’s probably not fair for me to not even give him a chance, but hey, that’s life. Better luck next time, Dick, you’ve been dumped.

    1. Oh, the story was “All in a Summer Day”, by the way, in case anyone is curious! It’s the one about the poor little girl on Venus who gets locked in the closet and doesn’t get to see the sun. Heart wrenching! I still think of it every time it rains for a long time (which is like twice a year in Arizona).
