Marry, Date or Dump: Hermione Edition

Screen Shot 2014-02-17 at 10.51.28 AMMuch has been made of J.K. Rowling’s statements on the possibility that Hermione should have ended up with Harry not Ron. Some people, myself included, think this is crazy talk. Other people think she shouldn’t have gotten married at all. I think there’s been too much fuss about the whole thing, but for this week’s marry, date or dump I thought we could choose what we think should have happened with Hermione. Between Harry, Ron, and Neville (who though a bit slow in the books, did end up as a Hogwarts professor) who would Hermione have married, dated, and dumped.

Let me know in the comments and choose for yourself as well if you wish. Substitutions for other characters from the wizarding world are not only welcome, they are encouraged!

  1. Hmmmm…This is a tricky one. Well, Ron is one of my top literary loves. So I would have to go with Ron to marry. But I think Neville would also be a nice guy to be married to…I guess we’ll date Neville, because he would be really sweet. And dump Harry. Sorry, Harry. (And same choices apply to Hermione).

  2. Great feature! Look… I can’t get past Ron and Hermione being together. They are perfect. I agree with about about Krum. I am glad she dated him too. I sometimes think that people who haven’t dated other people prior to who they marry will always wonder what it would’ve been like to date someone else. So I am all for dating a lot of people and then getting married.

  3. JK is entitled to her opinion, but honestly I think she got it right the first time – or rather, Hermione got it right. The friendship of the three is one of the great things about the whole HP series, the fact that it was NOT a love triangle was a big plus, Hermione seeing Ron’s worth even when he was a bumbling idiot and didn’t see his own worth, all as it should be.

  4. I think the obvious and simplistic choice is Harry, which is why Rowling didn’t go there. But on a character level, Harry is way to complex, he’s been through too much, and with Hermoine. That would hang over the marriage, in a bad way.

Ron is who she should end up with. He’s more earthy, more grounded. He gives more balance to Hermoine.

Neville would have been a cerebral marriage, though happy.

    1. Thanks for your insights. The readers of this blog are still 100% pro Ron (I agree that Harry was the obvious choice though. That’s why I was so happy in the books that Rowling didn’t go there).

  5. I’m sorry, but I’m going to have to break the streak-the Ron thing began to feel forced after the 4th book for me and the moment Hermione went all canary on Ron’s ass out of jealousy it just stopped clicking for me entirely. Which is not to say I would have preferred her with Harry, but…I had a lot of problems with J.K. and her attempts at romance altogether, basically, and it may well have just been the writing. In the movies I really like Hermione and Ron and wouldn’t change it.

If I’m getting to pick, though….I think if he’d survived she would have been great with Cedric. Hermione needs a little Hufflepuff in her life-let’s face it, she’s got Gryffindor and Ravenclaw covered all by herself. And he’s a thoughtful guy who’d be able to actually draw her out with sweetness and surprise her out of her worries with charm. I really like Cedric. 🙂

    1. No worries about breaking the streak. All opinions welcome here! I’m sticking with my Ron opinion, but I have to admit the idea of Hermione with Cedric is interesting. It seems like one of the few other pairings that I could see working. Thanks for commenting.
