Happy Bastille Day! I’ve chosen three characters from French literature for you to marry, date or dump. There is Raoul from The Phantom of the Opera, Marius from Les Miserables, and Edmond Dantes (the count) from The Count of Monte Cristo. I’m excited to see who you choose in the comments!

  1. Marry Edmond, God, I love Monte Cristo so much…

Date Raoul, go hang out at the opera and all of that other stuff, not a bad plan.

Not exactly dump, but stare longingly at Marius and sing ballads about he will never love me back. Basically, be Eponine? Is that an OK choice?

    1. Lovely choices Reenie! Monte Cristo is actually the one I have the least memory of (probably because it’s not also a musical) so I’m glad to hear that you love it! Happy Bastille Day!

  2. Marry Marius because I like that he’s passionate about a cause greater than himself, date Edmond Dantes, and dump Raoul. I’m not a huge fan of Raoul to be honest. Raoul always seemed like a weak character to me, maybe that’s because his foil was the Phantom…

    1. Thank you! That is so sweet! Let me know if you have any favorite books or genres you want me to feature on marry, date, or dump. I’m always looking for suggestions!

  3. I basically agree with Kaitlyn – marry Marius passionate about a greater cause but also kind and loving that is a hard combination, Date Edmond Dantes dashing and daring could add up to fun too – never felt the love for Rauol who always seemed week to me.

  4. I would say marry Dantes-smart, dangerous, strong, and rich? Sounds good to me. I’m not excited about dating either of the other two, as they both seem wishy-washy to me…can I get the Persian in here? If the Persian was here I’d marry him and date Dantes. As it is, probably date Marius. He seems like he knows how to have fun. Raoul’s just too clingy.

  5. Marry Edmond. I love the Phantom of the Opera, but Raoul annoys me so much ughhh! But still, I think he’d be a better date than Marius. With Marius, I’d probably end up just like Eponine, to be honest. And really, death and a broken heart just don’t suit me.
