Checking Up On My 2015 Reading Resolutions

halfway-there

Now that we’re more than halfway through 2015 (how did this happen???) I thought I’d better check in with my reading/bookish resolutions to see how I’m doing. I’m only having middling success with my main resolution which was to write everyday. I say middling, because I’m really happy with the amount I’ve written. I finished a first draft of my new(ish) project and am working my way through the second draft with a lot of excitement and hope. But I also say middling because I definitely have not written every day this year. I haven’t even written every day this week. But like when your mind wanders when it’s meditating, I’m finding it helpful to acknowledge the stray and then try to get back into it (which sounds positively vomit inducing as I’m reading this back to myself, but it’s also kind of true). Here’s how I’m doing on my other 2015 goals:

  1. Read at least 100 books: I’ve read 85 books so far (huge spike in middle grade reading partially responsible for this), so I think 100 is going to be no problem.
  2. Read at least 25 new-to-me authors: Completed (I’ve actually read 62 new-to-me authors so far this year and hope for many more in 2015)
  3. Read at least 10 debut novelists from either 2014 or 2015: Completed (I’ve read 12 debuts from 2015 and 4 debuts from 2014)
  4. Read at least 25 authors featuring a “diverse” author and/or main character. (I put the term diverse in quotes because it seems super vague/charged, but I will define that as outside of the “mainstream” i.e. featuring PoC, LGBT, mental illness, different abilities, different religions, etc.) I’ve read 18 of these so far and hope to far surpass my goal of 25 diverse books by the end of the year.
  5. Definitely need to  up my game requesting ARC’s. (I worked on this a bit this year, but could definitely do better). Completed (I’ve gotten 14 ARCs or review copies so far this year)
  6. Carefully read every book I’m assigned in my literature classes. Didn’t read The Dark Is Rising, by Susan Cooper as closely as I wish, but otherwise accomplished this in the spring semester.
  7. Really study more of my favorite YA books, to try to figure out how the authors crafted them. I’ve been rereading John Green, Rainbow Rowell, Jenny Han, and Stephanie Perkins to try to figure out how they create such magical books. I still have a lot to learn.
  8. Read HOUSE OF MIRTH – this was on my resolution list last year and I didn’t get to it. This was the first kindle book I bought in 2008 and I still haven’t got to it. Hopefully 2015 is the year! Hoping to knock this off the list in August!
  9. Attend at least 20 author readings. Been to about 15 of these.
  10. Check more books out from the library and when I do buy books try to support local bookstores, like Books of Wonder where I spend at least 30% of my free time. I’m checking library books out like it’s my job and I bought all my school books from Books of Wonder last semester (along with a few fun ones for me).

All in all, I’m doing much better than expected on my reading resolutions. Did you make any reading resolutions this year? If so, how are they going?

  1. This is such an inspiring list…I might have to borrow some of your goals for 2016 🙂 I always try to go to author talks and events but they always seem to be when I have class and skipping classes kind of defeats the whole purpose.

I hope things keep going well for you. And enjoy House of Mirth! I read it in undergrad and really enjoyed it!

    1. Totally understand the struggle of going to events when you’re a student … lucky for me my program requires I go to a certain number of them. Glad to hear your liked House of Mirth … it’s been a long time since I read a classic, so I’m hoping it goes okay.
