You guys might have noticed from some of my recent marry date or dump choices that I’ve been getting more into fantasy lately. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still in love with contemporary and I still think contemporary probably makes the most sense for me as a writer, but I’m enjoying reading books with magic and curses and powers people don’t understand a lot. There are so many good fantasy series coming out right now (or that I somehow missed in my contemporary-only binge). Here are five that I can’t stop talking about.
- The Winner’s Curse, by Marie Rutkoski (also the sequel The Winner’s Crime)
- Shadow and Bone, by Leigh Bardugo (I finished book two in the bath today and can’t wait to get my hands on the next Grisha book!)
- An Ember in the Ashes, by Sabaa Tahir
- Red Queen, by Victoria Aveyard
- A Court of Thorns and Roses, by Sarah J. Maas
Have you read any of these books? What did you think? Any other fantasy recommendations (other than Raven Boys and Artemis Fowl which I put on hold at the library after Tuesday’s post)?

Yay, I’m so glad you’re going to read the Raven Boys!
I loved the first Grisha book so much, but then again, Sturmhond has my heart and he comes in at book 2, right? I plowed through those books too. Did you see that Leigh Bardugo is writing another Grisha-related series? The first book is called Six of Crows, I believe. But you’re probably light years ahead of me on this book news, haha!
I actually hadn’t heard that. So excited!
I love fantasy and i’m so glad that you’re getting into it! I haven’t read Winner’s Curse, Red Queen or Ember in the Ashes. I really loved ACOTAR and Shadow and Bone was great, too. I would recommend Throne of Glass by Sarah J Mass — she’s such an amazing writer. I haven’t read it yet but I’ve heard so many great things about These Broken Stars. The Lunar Chronicles (Cinder, Scarlet, Cress, Fairest, and Winter) by Marissa Meyer is another great series!
Thanks for the suggestions! Definitely ready for some more fantasy in my life!
All of these are books I’ve heard rave reviews of so awesome I can’t wait to try them! I love the Lunar Chronicles, they are really thoughtful, interesting takes on fairy tales that it’s like reading a whole new story. I’d highly recommend 🙂
Thanks Resa! I read Cinder, but never continued with the Lunar Chronicles for some reason. Must to get on that immediately.
