Marry, Date or Dump: Heathcliff, Willoughby, & Rhett Butler

I picked three of my favorite literary bad boys to marry, date, or dump this week. You get to choose between Heathcliff from Wuthering Heights, Willoughby from Sense and Sensibility, and Rhett Butler from Gone with the Wind. Let me know your picks in the comments!

Here are mine:

  • Marry: Rhett Butler (he’s bad in a way that seems good, plus Clark Gable).
  • Date: Willoughby (confusing character bound by economic constraints, who still acts irresponsibly)
  • Dump: Heathcliff (way to hung up on Cathy)

  1. I agree with your choices, though I would say that Heathcliff is a sociopath — perhaps for good reason, but still, not a good dating or marriage prospect. I wouldn’t want to be around anyone from that family as they are depicted in the book. Rhett would probably need have some outdated notions around women and race eradicated, but he seems to genuinely like women, have a generous heart, and be willing to commit. He just got tired waiting for Scarlett to grow up.

  2. I agree with your choices completely. Though my reasoning is a bit different.

Marry Rhett: He is a VERY good husband, for the most part, to Scarlett, I mean they had ISSUES, but, come on. Plus, yeah, Clark Gable.
Date: Willoughby, oh the fun! He’s SO MUCH FUN.
Dump: Heathcliff – I want nothing to do with that mess of a human…
