Ten Life Lessons from Harry Potter

Hi friends! It’s been a long time (over a year) since I searched through a book for some life lessons. In the post-election days, I saw several friends turning to Harry Potter for comfort. I understand why. These books and their characters feel like good friends and great teachers at the same time. They also portray a world where great evil exists but good triumphs in the end. There are too many life lessons to gain from this book to write into a single post, or even glean in a single reading. Here are ten of my favorites: Continue reading “Ten Life Lessons from Harry Potter”

Some Thoughts on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (Finally)

29056083How has it been over a month since Harry Potter and the Cursed Child came out? I literally don’t know where time goes. Rather predictably, I planned on going to at least one of the super fun-looking midnight release parties held July 31 and bookstores across the city but then fell asleep at 9pm instead. Also rather predictably, I woke up Sunday morning, downloaded the book (play?), and read through the story in one sitting.

I have a hard time know what to say when people ask me about this book.

There are things I liked about it, for sure. Scorpius Malfoy will forever be one of my favorite characters in the Hogwarts world. I love that Draco’s son is like a perfect mix of Ron and Hermione. Poetic justice, for everyone. I also really loved Albus Severus as a character and found the plot very clever. It was a really fun diving back into the world of Hogwarts for a day.  Continue reading “Some Thoughts on Harry Potter and the Cursed Child (Finally)”

7 Books Every(one) Should Read

toptentuesday

Hi friends. It’s thesis crunch. Due this week! So this is kind of a joke, but also kind of serious. I’ve been shocked by all the people I’ve met (even someone in my writing for children master’s degree) who haven’t read these seven books. So wish me luck in my final push writing my thesis and, yeah, if you haven’t read these books yet maybe you should get on that…although (I’m guessing) that I’m going to get some comments disagreeing with me. Marry, Date or Dump: Hogwarts Houses

house-crests1

Does anyone else ever think of Harry Potter when then think of Christmas? Instead of book characters, I thought we might want to marry, date, and dump Hogwarts houses. This is going to be a tough one for me, but I super excited to see what choices you make. Let me know in comments!  Continue reading “Marry, Date or Dump: Hogwarts Houses”

Marry, Date or Dump: Defense Against the Dark Arts Professors

Happy Monday friends! I’m still in California (although getting ready to reluctantly head back to New York in a couple of days) and here is one of my favorite old marry date or dump topics from December 2013. You have a lot of professors to chose from. Quirrell, Lockhart, Remus Lupin, Mad-eye Moody (Barty Crouch Jr.), Dolores Umbridge, Snape, and Carrow. Can’t wait to read in the comments who you pick!  Continue reading “Marry, Date or Dump: Defense Against the Dark Arts Professors”

Marry, Date or Dump: Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, & Cedric Diggory

Confession, I’ve been venturing into a few HP fanfics lately. It is a pretty crazy world, and some of the stuff I see is not very good. But a lot of what I read is very very good, and it is definitely the most lovely to be back in this world again. As a result of this illicit reading, I definitely have had Harry Potter on my brain lately. I thought I’d throw back to a classic Marry Date or Dump and ask you to choose between these three integral characters.
