Ten Books I Meant To Read In 2017 But Didn’t Get To (Yet!)

toptentuesday2

Too many books, too little time. I know I’m not the only book blogger – or reader – who feels this way. There are so many books I marked, put on hold at the library, and even bought that I didn’t get to last year. Hoping to get to these ten ASAP, but let’s face it there are always more books coming out every week so … fingers crossed. What books are you hoping to read soon before the tidal wave of 2018 new releases hits your TBR list? Continue reading “Ten Books I Meant To Read In 2017 But Didn’t Get To (Yet!)”

Top Ten New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2017

toptentuesday2

Hi friends and happy new year! I hope you had a restorative holiday with lots of cozy reading time. I know, I did. Although now it’s back to writing, writing, writing. I worked hard to read lots of debut and new-to-me authors this year, so this list was particularly tricky for me to narrow down. But somehow I’ve managed to cull ten authors I’m so glad I discovered over the last year. I’m excited to read more of all of their books in the year ahead! Continue reading “Top Ten New-to-Me Authors I Read in 2017”

Top Ten Bookish Settings I’d Love to Visit

toptentuesday

Hi friends! Sorry, I’ve been missing. Trying to finish NaNoWriMo and do revisions on another project kept me busy! But I didn’t want to miss this Top Ten Tuesday. I always ask my creative writing students this questions as a springboard for talking about using sensory language in setting descriptions. Here are books with places that are vividly described and characters I’d love to meet. Continue reading “Top Ten Bookish Settings I’d Love to Visit”

Ten YA Books I’m SO Thankful For

toptentuesday2

Hi friends! Happy Tuesday and happy almost-Thanksgiving! I’m writing a little today about the YA books that helped inspire me to write YA and love YA and write the kind of YA that I do. It’s a little more verbose than my usual Tuesday posts. I think it’s because I’m in that gratitude zone you (sometimes) reach around the holidays. So here are the YA books I’m most thankful for! Continue reading “Ten YA Books I’m SO Thankful For”

Top Ten Unique Book Titles

toptentuesday2

Happy Tuesday, friends! I love book titles. A good book title will definitely convince me to read a book (see: The Princess Saves Herself in this One below). And I keep a long list of potential titles I might use some day as a writer. Here are some of my favorite book titles that stood out to me! They are all also excellent reads! Top Ten Yummy Foods Mentioned In Books

toptentuesday2

Okay, I’ll admit that I didn’t always go with the yummiest foods described in books. Sometimes I went for funny or interesting over delicious. Because in real life Potato Peel Pie sounds dubious and Turkish Delight is always a let down. But both pop of the page when described in their respective books!  I also limited myself to one food per book, otherwise the whole list would have been Harry Potter and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Continue reading “Top Ten Yummy Foods Mentioned In Books”

Top Ten Book Boyfriends (from the last year)

toptentuesday2

I write a lot about book boyfriends. I mean for *years* I wrote a marry, date or dump post about potential book boyfriends (and girlfriends!). Since I’ve covered the topic so extensively, I decided to limit this list to my literary crushes from the last year. Don’t judge me for how many YA boys there are on this list – they are way dreamier than the men in adult literary fiction. Continue reading “Top Ten Book Boyfriends (from the last year)”

Ten Books Featuring Characters with Mental Illness

toptentuesday2

Happy Tuesday Friends! There are so many negative tropes about mental illness floating around books and other media, that I thought I’d share some of the ones that have felt most true, nuanced, respectful to me. A lot of these have been hard to read (I’m looking at you Wintergirls) while others show characters who are already diagnosed and managing their mental illness (now I’m looking at you The Upside of Unrequited). Anyways, would love to know your thoughts on these books or others I should add to my TBR list! Continue reading “Ten Books Featuring Characters with Mental Illness”

Ten Books on my Fall TBR List

toptentuesday2

Too many books, too little time to read them all. My TBR is always expanding. It’s almost impossible for me to imagine what it used to feel like to go into the bookstore or library and have no idea what I wanted to read. Anyway, I know I won’t get to read all the books I want to this fall. But here are ten that I’m really going to try to make sure I read. Continue reading “Ten Books on my Fall TBR List”

Ten Books I Love From When I Started Getting Into YA

toptentuesday2

I know, I know, it’s Wednesday. I was spacing out yesterday, but didn’t want to miss this topic because I liked it a lot. I started writing YA before I was reading it widely. I’d read a few YA books in high school, was obsessed with Twilight along with my friends in college, and started reading Hunger Games with my students my first year teaching. But it was starting this blog, hoping to learn more about these books and the people who wrote them, that really made me fall in love with the genre. Here are my gateway YA books. Each one will always be incredibly special to me. Continue reading “Ten Books I Love From When I Started Getting Into YA”
