Ten Books that Should Be Assigned in High School

My high school was heavy on the classics, which was (and continues to be) awesome. But I definitely graduated twelfth grade with no idea that anything good was being written in the present tense. Also the diversity of what is considered “a classic” is highly problematic. I’m all for reading The Great Gatsby and Chaucer and Catcher in the Rye… but here are then books that I would love to see on more high school curriculums – I know I would have gotten a lot out of them if I’d been assigned to read them in school.

Top Ten Recommendations for People Who Want Diverse Summer Reads

toptentuesday2

Books open us up to new worlds. They help us empathize and identify with people that are different from us. When characters are the same, even in small ways, they make us feel understood and less alone. They are powerful. There are only a few weeks left in summer. Here are ten diverse summer reads. Reading any of them would be a fantastic use of your time. Continue reading “Top Ten Recommendations for People Who Want Diverse Summer Reads”

10 Best Books I’ve Read in 2017 (so far)

toptentuesday

Y’all, seriously how is it the end of June already? I can’t believe it. I know a lot has been happening, but it still feels like it should be march to me. One thing that has *definitely* been good about 2017 for me is all the amazing books I’ve read this year so far. It was hard to narrow down all the amazing options to this list of ten, but I did it! Top Ten Series I’ve Been Meaning to Start but Haven’t

toptentuesday2

There are endlessly too many books to read and too little time to read them. Series are a particularly big commitment. There are so many that look like I would love them that I haven’t started yet. Here are ten, I’ve extra been meaning to start (but still haven’t): Continue reading “Top Ten Series I’ve Been Meaning to Start but Haven’t”

Top Ten “Grown Up” Books I’ve Recently Added to my TBR List

toptentuesday2

If you’ve read this blog before, you know I’m pretty obsessed with all things YA. I don’t think YA is just for teenagers, and when I was a teenager I read way more “grown up” books than I do now – so part of me rejects both categories. But to escape from that tangent, I’ve been reading more adult nonfiction and fiction this year and I like a lot of them. Not the way I like books about teenagers smooching, but I still I like them. Here are some so called “grown up” books that I’m hoping to read in the not-too-distant future. Let me know if you have suggestions on which to start with! Top Ten Most Anticipated Book Releases for the Rest of the Year

Happy Tuesday! I hope everyone (in America) had a good Memorial Day weekend. I started four different books and am now trying to find time to finish them all. I can’t believe we are almost to June. Top Ten Things On My Reading WishList

toptentuesday

Happy Tuesday! I have more books that I want to read right now than time to read them, so adding to my reading list would be folly. However, if more of these kinds of these books hit the shelves, I don’t think I would be able to resist them.

  1. More YA books told by multiple female perspectives, like the Burn for Burn trilogy by Jenny Han and Siobahn Vivian.
  2. A book where everyone thinks the world is going to end, but then it doesn’t and people need to deal with the aftermath.
  3. A Louisa May Alcott retelling that’s not Little Women. I’d love to see a modern take on Rose In Bloom or An Old-Fashioned Girl.
  4. A road trip romance, like Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson.
  5. Historical YA set in Tudor England – so here for all things Queen Elizabeth I.
  6. Romance novels with a feminist angle.
  7. Fantasy with a completely new/unique magic system.
  8. More nonfiction/memoirs about marriage (or lack thereof) demographics/customs/changes in the vein of All the Single Ladies, by Rebecca Traister, or Spinster, by Kate Bolick.
  9. An #ownvoices beach read by a PoC author.
  10. Sister books! I know there are *a lot* of these already in existence. But I always want more!

Ten YA Books With Girls of Color on the Cover

toptentuesday

Representation is important. Diversity is important in the stories that get told inside the book. But it’s also important on the covers – where for too long and too often girls of cover were not represented at all. Luckily, that’s beginning to change and these gorgeous covers are the result!
