Marry, Date or Dump: Hazel, Augustus, & Isaac from TFiOS

I told you there was going to be lots of The Fault in Our Stars love on the blog this week. I know that I have already done marry date or dump posts featuring boys from John Green books and girls from John Green books. I’ve even done one featuring the author himself. But I wanted to do one that was more specific to TFiOS. I had a hard time trying to think of a cohesive three girls or three boys (the closest I got was Hazel’s Dad, Gus’s Dad, and Patrick the support group leader). Instead of giving you all that crazy conundrum, I thought I’d do my first mixed gender post and give you Hazel, Augustus, and Isaac. Choosing one of them to dump feels impossible to me.

Hazel Grace Lancaster: "I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once."
Hazel Grace Lancaster: “I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, and then all at once.”
Augustus Waters: "My thoughts are stars I can't fathom into constellations."
Augustus Waters: “My thoughts are stars I can’t fathom into constellations.”
Isaac: "Love is keeping the promise anyways."
Isaac: “Love is keeping the promise anyways.”

Also, feel free to answer the Hazel’s Dad, Gus’s Dad, and Patrick the support group leader question if you feel inspired and want bonus points!

  1. I would date and marry Isaac because he was my favorite character. I would dump Gus and Hazel because, meh.

I preferred the three of them in a friendship, rather than a romantic interest of any kind.

    1. Interesting. I feel like I need to reread the book and focus on Isaac, because so many people have told me he was their favorite character. I was more focused on Gus and Hazel when I read the book, so I feel like I’m missing out.

  2. I would marry Hazel, date Isaac, and dump Augustus. Hazel is wonderful, intelligent, and dependable. Isaac seems like he could be a lot of fun to hang out with for a while and I don’t think he gets enough credit. While Augustus is very poetic and thoughtful, he might be a bit much for me to handle in a relationship.

    1. Great choices. I totally understand about Augustus. Even though he was such a well drawn character, he did have a “larger than life” (terrible pun) personality which could definitely be overwhelming.

  3. I would marry Augustus – he is by far my favorite character, I guess I would date Isaac and dump Hazel. I just never really related to her.

    1. Funny. Hazel was my favorite. But I totally understand the attraction to Augustus.

I think it’s interesting because we only see Hazel through her own perspective and we only see Gus through Hazel’s eyes.
